Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in Iceland. Best known for the walking path that runs behind the curtain of water where visitors can enjoy a truly unique viewpoint. A 60 meter high shower!

What Seljalands means?

The Icelandic name of the waterfall, literally means 'selling the land of waterfalls' in English.


How to get there?
Driving from Vík and the East:

If you take the Road 1 passing through Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Vík, it will take approximately 1 hour to reach the fall. Just continue on Road 1, going straight until you see the sign to Þórsmerkurvegur, road number 249 leading you to Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi and finally Þórsmörk Valley.
Driving from Reykjavík to Seljalandsfoss:

From the capital city, the route is a while longer, taking about 1 hour 45 minutes. You will want to take the Road 1 which leads through Selfoss and Hvolsvöllur. Continue East for approximately 20 minutes before reaching a sign to road 249, which will lead you to Seljalandsfoss.


 Visiting the Waterfall:

  • 15 minutes hike nonstop. You have to be careful because of the water, it is slippery. There is a little bit of climbing and stairs. But it is not very difficult.
  • Protect your camera, cell phone or anything you bring with you it might get wet when walking behind the waterfall.
  • Best time to go is early or late to avoid the hustle of tourists’ buses. And of course the view at sunset is way better.
  • Toilets and food truck are available at the car park.
  • Parking is not free.
Things to do near:

  • Hit up Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Geysir Geothermal Zone.
  • Thorsmork valley is one of the most popular hiking routes in Iceland. Boating beautiful views and a moderate hike.
  • 45 minutes away from the waterfall you will find the famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach.
Restaurants near:

  • Stracta Bistro is 31 minutes far from the waterfall. It opens from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Restaurant Árhús is also 31 minutes far from the waterfall. On weekdays it opens from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm till 9:00 pm. On the weekend it opens from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

19 minutes far from the waterfall you can find plenty of restaurants and hotels.
